Young Voices Take the Spotlight at Ballymoney Soroptimistsā€™ Speech Contest

magazine Nov 19, 2024

Thursday evening saw The Old School House in Ballymoney come alive with passion, debate, and a touch of drama as 23 talented young women took centre stage at the 42nd Annual Public Speaking Competition, hosted by Ballymoney & District Soroptimists.

From moral dilemmas to futuristic challenges, these budding orators tackled big questions with confidence, intelligence, and heart.

The topics on offer were as diverse as they were thought-provoking – poverty, space travel, euthanasia, the lessons of WWII, cashless societies, and the need for community gardens.

Each competitor brought their unique perspective to the table, delivering arguments that made the audience think, laugh, and even, at times, get a little emotional.

It wasn’t just a competition but a celebration of ideas and the power of a well-delivered speech.

Representing eight post-primary schools, including Dalriada, Dominican College Portstewart, and Loreto College Coleraine, the competitors brought their A-game. Parents, friends, and supporters filled the venue, creating a buzzing atmosphere that encouraged these budding speakers to shine.

The competition rules were clear: each participant had six minutes to present their argument, with a green light signalling four minutes, amber at five, and red at six. No competitor exceeded the time limit – a testament to their preparation and poise.

Adjudicators Muriel Whitten, Alex Tannahill, and Alison Steen faced the unenviable task of selecting winners, given the consistently high standard.

Ultimately, there were three standout performances. In third place, Sara McEldowney from St Mary’s Grammar School delved into the topic, “Space Travel is a Waste of Time”, questioning humanity's priorities.

Second place went to Cliona McDonald of Coleraine Grammar, who explored “Will We Ever Become a Cashless Society?” with sharp insight.

But the night belonged to Talent Maguma from Loreto College, Coleraine, who clinched first place with her poignant and thought-provoking speech, “Eighty Years On: Has the World Forgotten the Lessons of WWII?”

Talent will now represent Ballymoney at the Overall Finals in Hillsborough on 1st February 2025.

A proud President, Sharon McCaffrey, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, while organisers Ruth Elliott and Elizabeth McFetridge hailed the evening as a tremendous success.
