Stay Alert: Coleraine Woman Urges Safety After Disturbing Incident

Nov 13, 2024

A Coleraine woman, whom we’ll refer to as Sarah (her real name is withheld for privacy), is urging others to take precautions when walking alone at night after a recent unsettling experience.

She is also keen to make people aware of the contact number for 'Strut Safe' - a helpline dedicated to supporting those who feel vulnerable walking home.

“I love walking and would walk by myself everywhere, but this has made me very cautious,” she shared, reflecting on how the experience has changed her perspective.

“I was walking on Railway Road after I got off the train when I realised I was being followed,” she recounted.

“Luckily, the pizza place on Railway Road was opened and they helped me. It was a very scary experience but I'm OK now," she revealed.

"I was heading towards town with all the shops shut and late in the evening with very few people about.

“We should definitely all be carrying sprays and alarms. It's the first time I've thought I should be carrying an alarm or spray.

"All women and girls need these in their bag. It's just not safe anymore."

Fortunately, police were able to apprehend the individual who had been following her, bringing some closure to a harrowing experience.

After the incident, Sarah discovered Strut Safe, a volunteer-run service that provides support for those walking alone at night. Their helpline operates from 7pm to 3am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 7pm to 1am on Sundays.

“I saw a post about Strut Safe on Facebook and thought people should know it’s there if needed,” Sarah explained. “Like most things, you don’t know the support is there until after the event.”

Strut Safe volunteers are trained to stay on the line, offering reassurance and guidance to anyone who feels uneasy walking home. For anyone who might need this service, the number to call is 0333 3500 286. More information is available at https://strutsafe.org.

Sarah’s message is a powerful reminder to remain vigilant and prepared. Simple measures - whether carrying an alarm, saving the Strut Safe number, or simply being aware of one’s surroundings can make all the difference.
