North Coast Girls Smashing It: Kia And Bonnie’s Sporting Successes

magazine Apr 17, 2025

It’s a week of sheer pride and celebration for the North Coast as not one, but two of its brightest young sporting stars make waves on the national and international stage.

Cricket sensation Kia McCartney has officially become the first player to win a senior Ireland cap while representing Coleraine Cricket Club.

Aged just 18, Kia made her full international debut on 14 April in Lahore during a World Cup qualifier – a match that now holds huge significance for local sport.

Presented with her cap by fellow North-Wester and good friend Alana Dalzell, it was an emotional milestone for the young spinner who only joined the senior squad in 2023.

“It was amazing to make my full International debut,” Kia said. “I’m determined to make the most of my opportunity.”

While her family couldn’t travel to Pakistan, their influence is undeniable. Kia credits her dad, Stephen, as a major force behind her sporting success.

“Dad has really taken me along on my journey. He’s very honest, and when he knew I was serious about cricket, he gave me the tools and pushed me to get there.”

She also shares the pitch (and hockey field!) with her sister Kenya, playing side by side with the Bannsiders Women’s team. A true family affair.

And as if that weren’t enough sporting success for one week, Coleraine Hockey Club’s Bonnie Connor-Boyd has been recognised at the prestigious 2025 Future Stars Awards, hosted at Queen’s University Belfast.

The glittering event honoured the most talented young athletes across Ulster, and Bonnie’s inclusion speaks volumes about her growing reputation on the hockey scene.

The celebrations don’t stop there – Bonnie secured a spot on the Irish U-16 squad, who are on tour in Germany this Easter. A thrilling opportunity for the young powerhouse, and another proud moment for her club and family.

With their dedication, resilience, and undeniable talent, Kia and Bonnie are showing that girls from the North Coast are ready to take on the world and win.

These are the names to watch. Get used to hearing them.

Congratulations to Kia and Bonnie!
