How Limavady High School Raised a Staggering £60,000 for Air Ambulance NI
Nov 19, 2024When Limavady High School announced Air Ambulance NI as their chosen charity last October, few could have anticipated just how incredible their fundraising journey would be.
Inspired by the personal connection of students Harry and Ellie Smyth, who lost their father in a tragic road accident in 2019, the school community came together with a goal as ambitious as their spirits were high: £35,000, enough to fund the lifesaving service for an entire week.
By the end of their fundraising efforts, they had nearly doubled that target, raising an astounding £60,000, including Gift Aid.
The fundraising efforts were as diverse as they were inspiring. Highlights included:
Christmas Craft Hamper & Draw: Mr. Caskey’s 9F class raised £843, while a PS5 Christmas raffle created plenty of festive buzz.
Community Spirit: Donations poured in, including £3,400 raised by Roy Nutt at a National Tyre Distributions Association dinner and an amazing £1,000 from Karen Brown, who gifted her birthday donations.
Student Initiatives: Year 10’s Harry Caskey raised £1,250 with a “guess the sweets” competition, and Year 12’s Lily Thompson completed a gruelling 24-hour challenge that raised £2,950.
The creativity didn’t stop there. From Ice Pop Fridays to charity netball tournaments, a school colour run, and even a darts competition, Limavady High’s fundraising was as innovative as it was community-driven.
The efforts culminated in the glittering LHS May Ball at the Roe Park Resort, where nearly 200 guests gathered to celebrate a year of hard work and generosity. The event featured inspiring speeches from Harry Smyth and the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Mr Steven Callaghan, alongside a raffle and auction showcasing local businesses' generosity.
Principal Mr. Mornin reflected on the year, saying, “I’m incredibly proud of our school community. This achievement showcases the power of teamwork and the generosity of spirit that defines us at LHS.”
By the end of the evening, the school had shattered their £35,000 target, raising an awe-inspiring £60,000.
Katrina Hughes, Air Ambulance NI’s Area Fundraising Manager, was overwhelmed by the school’s incredible achievement. “Limavady High School has done something truly remarkable. Their fundraising will support nearly nine days of this vital service, and their creativity and dedication have inspired everyone at Air Ambulance NI. On behalf of the entire team, thank you for helping to save lives.”
Air Ambulance NI relies on public support to raise £2.5 million annually to keep their service operational. By joining initiatives like Club AANI, supporters can ensure this lifesaving work continues.
