'A Very Bright Light Has Gone Out in Portrush': A Tribute to Kerry McFadden Newman
Feb 27, 2025
Portrush is in mourning following the heartbreaking loss of Kerry McFadden Newman. Her passing on February 24th has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew her. Tributes have been pouring in for a woman described as a force of nature—vibrant, compassionate, and utterly unforgettable.
As a Lieutenant Colonel in Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, Kerry’s distinguished career was marked by dedication and excellence, and she earned the prestigious Associate Royal Red Cross (ARRC).
Her passion for service didn’t stop there—she was the heart and soul of her community, from the stage of the Portrush Theatre Company and charity Strictly events to the rugby fields of Coleraine Rugby Club, where she served as Mini Rugby Convenor, Medic, and Team Manager.
The club paid a heartfelt tribute, saying, “Kerry put her hand up and not only volunteered regularly but went so far and beyond—and always with a smile. The outpouring of love and adoration is a testament to a beautiful soul who left such a positive impact on everyone she met.”
Kerry’s close friend, Gerald McQuilken, paid tribute to her infectious spirit.
“She was a Portrush lass through and through, and in all walks of life, she was a real inspiration to all those around her.
“Whether serving her country nursing patients, guiding her children or helping out in her community, Kerry was always seen with her beautiful smile.
“Recently Kerry took part in my Strictly charity event and won the trophy because of her dedication and enthusiasm, not to mention being a fabulous dancer.
“She encouraged all involved and helped turn us from a bunch of wannabe dancers into a little close group of friends
“Just last week, Kerry and I had a meeting to plan our next Strictly Charity event. I will miss her ideas, enthusiasm and her encouragement.
“Having known her since she was a little fairy in the kid's chorus in Panto many years ago, it makes it all the harder to know she is gone.
Her legacy extends beyond her achievements - Kerry was an inspiration. Becca Ann, a fellow nurse, beautifully summed up her impact:
“You are the brightest of stars, and the world is much dimmer without you. Whenever I’m asked who is the nurse I most want to be like, I would always think of you. You leave behind a legacy of nurses inspired by your dedication to excellence, compassion, and care. It has been a privilege and honour to have known and worked with you.”
A service celebrating Kerry’s life will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Portrush, on Monday 3rd March at 2.00 pm. In true Kerry style, mourners are asked to attend in bright and cheerful dress, a fitting tribute to a woman who brought so much colour to the lives of others.
Kerry McFadden Newman’s warmth, kindness, and unwavering spirit will live on in the countless lives she touched, leaving a legacy of love, dedication, and inspiration.
